The Funchal City Council started on the 10th of March, the implementation of a pilot circuit for door-to-door restaurant sector bio-waste collection in the centre of Funchal, more specifically in Rua da Carreira.
“In line with the strategy adopted by the municipality of Funchal towards the promotion of environmental sustainability and the reduction of organic waste, 80 litre brown containers were delivered free of charge to 17 restaurants on this street, which are intended for the selective disposal of bio-waste, namely fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds and coffee filters, which constitute more than 30% of restaurant waste,” says the municipality in a press release.
The CMF Environment Department will collect these containers daily and send the waste via the green line at the Viveiros Transfer Station, and then later going on for composting at the Meia Serra Station.
At a later stage, the CMF will extend this experience to other areas of the city, namely, Sé, Fernão Ornelas, and Zona Velha, where there is a high concentration of restaurants.
To date the municipality has 13 community composters, and so far 4683 kg of compost has been produced, which corresponds to 28098 kg of recovered organic waste.
With this initiative, the CMF intends to “reduce the production of undifferentiated waste and promote the increase of selectively collected waste, in this case recycling it for the production of organic compost, and thus contribute to the municapality’s circular economy.”
