The Funchal City Council (CMF) decided to exercise regulatory power in relation to local accommodation. The decision, made today at the Council meeting, follows national legislation, in force since November 1st, which grants a 12-month period for municipalities to choose to regulate this sector autonomously or follow national guidelines.
The president of the Funchal municipality said, in a note sent to the press, that the regulation of local accommodation is fundamental not only for urban rehabilitation, but also for the future of housing and economic activity in the city.
“Local accommodation is one of the components that has directly to do with economic activity, which is fundamental, with the rehabilitation of areas of the city, but also with the future of housing itself and the existing housing needs. And, therefore, from this conciliation of interests, the Funchal City Council must exercise its strategy at all times”.
On the same note, Cristina Pedra clarifies that Funchal City Hall, when exercising the right to regulate, guarantees the adaptation of rules to the city’s specificities, thus avoiding the imposition of standards that may not be appropriate to the local reality.
The mayor highlights that if the Chamber chose not to regulate, the city would be subject to future national rules, which may or may not be beneficial for Funchal. With the new measure, which will be submitted to the City Council, the Council maintains control over the definition of rules for local accommodation, ensuring the possibility of adjustments according to the city’s needs.
