Madeira launches study to understand the eating habits of its population

The Regional Health Service (SESARAM), through its Nutrition Service, will launch a study to investigate the eating habits of Madeirans.

The announcement of this new project was made this Wednesday, during the celebrations of World Food Day, promoted by SESARAM, and which took place at Colégio dos Jesuítas.

On the sidelines of this initiative, Pedro Ramos highlighted the importance of knowing how the population eats, as well as what type of food they consume or whether or not they are overweight.

This study will reach a universe of almost 700 people, of different age groups. The survey will be carried out online.

Surveys of this type “are always important for us to assess our health literacy, our education, our awareness in this area of ​​food”, stressed the regional secretary of Health and Civil Protection, highlighting the relationship between food and disease prevention.

In this regard, the government official highlighted the high prevalence of obesity in the Region, when compared to the rest of the country.

In this sense, Pedro Ramos reinforced the need to continue investing in prevention in this area.

Regarding the proportion of nutritionists in the Region, the governor recognized the less favorable scenario when compared to the continent, but took the opportunity to highlight the competition taking place to hire three new professionals in this area for SESARAM, which currently has 30 nutritionists.

At the time, and after being confronted by DIÁRIO on the subject, Pedro Ramos downplayed the fact that the Region had not provided the necessary data to the Order of Nutritionists to appear in the survey of professionals in the area in public health services carried out by that institution at the same level. national and which, for the first time, included Madeira.
