The Madeira Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service reported this Monday that the bad weather in the region has caused 28 incidents, involving 66 firefighters and 31 technical resources.

In a report on activity between 9:00 pm on Sunday and 7:00 pm this Monday, the authority said that 12 fallen trees, one collapsed structure, six cases of falling building elements, one damage to the electrical grid and five mass movements were recorded, among others.

The municipality of Santana had the highest number of occurrences (11), followed by Funchal with seven. The municipalities of Ribeira Brava and Calheta registered three each, Santa Cruz two and Porto Santo one.

The Port Authority of Funchal has extended warnings of rough seas and strong winds until 6pm on Wednesday based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The regional maritime authority indicates that the wind will be “fresh to very fresh, sometimes strong at the beginning and temporarily decreasing to moderate to fresh, during the night, becoming west/southwest from dawn onwards, increasing to fresh to very fresh from the morning”.

Regarding sea agitation, he says that, on the north coast, the waves will be from the northwest between five and seven meters, decreasing to 2.5 to 3.5 meters in height, while on the south side they will be from the west/southwest between four and five meters, being between three and four meters on the west side.

Given this meteorological situation, the captaincy reinforces the recommendations to the entire maritime community and the general population regarding the precautions to be taken, both when preparing to go to sea and when they are at sea or in coastal areas.

The captaincy includes in the list of suggestions the reinforcement of mooring and keeping a close watch on moored and anchored vessels, avoiding walks along the seashore or in areas exposed to rough seas and not practicing recreational fishing activities.

Movement at Madeira International Airport — Cristiano Ronaldo was restricted, with four arrivals cancelled and some flights diverted to other airports, but the situation is now returning to normal.

The concessionaire of the maritime line between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo cancelled the trips scheduled for Wednesday due to the bad weather conditions that jeopardized the “safety of passengers and the ship”.
